Glass was discovered about four thousand years ago in the Eastern Mediterranean beneath an ancient pottery kiln by the Phoenicians probably as the fused silica of the pots mixed with the alkaline ash of the earth below. By 1500 B.C, pressed and molded glass vessels were very common in Egypt and the skills to make such vessels had spread to the area of modern Venice and even to Hall in Austria. Venetian glass and Belgian glass is among the more popular types of glass in the world. Alexander the Great is known to have founded the great glass works in Alexandria right after he founded the city itself in 332 B.C. The history of the discovery of glass is rich and varied. Glass, the material and its unique transparency is an intricate and complex puzzle for many. It has been known to result from a unique molecular arrangement. Nowadays glass is even used for architecture in the form of glass splashbacks, glass worktops and shower screens.
